Jul 08, · Sandboxie may be your first line of defense, but it should certainly be complemented by the more traditional anti-virus and anti-malware solutions. These solutions can let you know if your system does become infected in any way. Typically, those other solutions employ various forms of pattern matching to discover malicious software and other threats. Dec 21, Sandboxie extends the operating system (OS) with sandboxing capabilities by blending into it. Applications can never access hardware such as disk storage directly, they have to ask the OS to do it for them. Since Sandboxie integrates into the OS, it can do what it does without risk of being circumvented/5(51). I’m not sure if this post belongs in this section but it didn’t seem to fit in anywhere else to me anyway. Last but not least, since Sophos is shutting down their license server on June 1, and shutting down their forum on June 2, Will a Sophos pre-compiled version be made available? The latest version of Sandboxie Win 7, 8. This is the last version of Sandboxie that Sophos will make available to the community and no further updates will be made to it.
All restricted features have been made completely free in this version. Any further improvements to Sandboxie will need to be made through the open source community. I assume this means that Sophos will no longer continue creating updates to the last version of Sandboxie but have made it open source and I guess that means anyone with coding experience can create a version of Sandboxie and that isn’t necessarily a good thing.
I was able to download the 32bit but the 64bit is flagged and medium risk by Norton. I did test install using VMware on a virtual 64bit OS and it wouldn’t install basically saying that I couldn’t install 32bit software on 64bit system. Basically I’m writing to ask if anyone has used David Xanatos version of Sandboxie which is v5. I would like to know whether or not it’s okay to use the software since it’s an unofficial version of version or just continue to use the last “official” version which is v5.
Just in case the David Xanatos version isn’t deemed safe, does anyone have another alternative to Sandboxie??? I’m writing to ask if anyone has used David Xanatos version of Sandboxie which is v5.
The two version are located here. Currently there are two main forks of Sandboxie development now that the code is open source and has been released. Granted, each thread is about a Sandboxie Open source project, but this is all they have in common, as both projects have different goals in mind. So basically you’re saying that you wouldn’t install David’s software on your “real” computer but install it on your virtual OS instead.
It’s such a shame that Sophos decided to stop developing Sandboxie as it is a very useful piece of software. Unfortunately there are no other alternatives to Sandboxie that have the same feature set that I know of. I don’t have any personal experience with them so can’t offer any advice on them but you should see if they fit your needs.
I think there is going to be some collaboration between Tom and David. So there is a chance that David’s Sandboxie Plus build may also be properly signed so it won’t be flagged as malware. I do like the proposed changes he wants to implement in Sandboxie Plus.
Either way, I will be testing both builds on a virtual machine before I implement it on my host OS. For now, I would wait and see. The code was only recently released and both developers are still working on their builds. Posted 23 May – PM. I also know that Windows has some sort of virtualization but I think it’s for the “entire” Windows environment if I’m phrasing it correctly instead of just you just being able to use it individually like Sandboxie.
I’ve also read something about software called Deep Freeze but it’s kind of confusing I was searching for an answer to my dilemma about how I couldn’t download anything when I had Chrome Sandboxed. I typed my dilemma into google and found that I needed to update to a more recent version.
As to how I found out about David’s Sandboxie version I can’t remember. More than likely it was by accident because more often than not, that’s the way I find out about many things via the net. I’m looking for one thing and come across something else and just as interesting or useful. Thanks for the information about the collaboration concerning Sandboxie and I look forward to what happens next.
I know that there are tons of people that will be just as happy as I am to learn that Sandboxie will live on. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and the upcoming holiday and if you plan on going out on the town I was on the Sandboxie forum looking around and read that there is a Sandboxie open source update v5.

Sandboxie v5. Please log in to reply. Posted 18 May – PM Hi: I’m not sure if this post belongs in this section but it didn’t seem to fit in anywhere else to me anyway. They had this on their website Will a Sophos pre-compiled version be made available?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, I’m writing to ask if anyone has used David Xanatos version of Sandboxie which is v5. Posted 18 May – PM Currently there are two main forks of Sandboxie development now that the code is open source and has been released. Tom’s project leans more toward continuity, to keeping the software being what it is. No big changes. On the other hand, David’s project is more liberal, he want’s to make a lot of changes to Sandboxie.
There are other major differences, Tom will sign his builds, David will not. His builds will get flagged as malware, and Tom’s won’t. With Tom’s build, we will run our computers and use SBIE as we always have, with David’s builds you might have to run your computers in test mode or boot with driver signing disabled.
I think the differences in both projects is so clear that there is room for both projects to exist on their own, each project has to offer what it takes to attract their kind of users, and because of that, both deserve their own dedicated thread. More info on the changes that are planned for Sandboxie Plus is detailed in this post.
Also, is there another similiar piece of software to Sandboxie that you would recommend??? Posted 18 May – PM Unfortunately there are no other alternatives to Sandboxie that have the same feature set that I know of.
