Verified Purchase. While walking the other evening, we wanted to find some common sights in the sky. I tried to get a couple of free apps both reviewed as “Don’t Bother With This One” because they didn’t work at all!

It works! It has some really cool features and we found what we were looking for – both of the Dippers, and lots other things even satellites! I am fond of this app. But the developer has apparently abandoned it on Amazon. The latest update was version 1. In that mode, it has performed very well, with many useful features.

Without GPS, I needed to add my longitude and latitude manually, though the program would not allow me to enter a location name. It still orients itself perfectly to my actual location, however. In use outside under night skies, without any device extras, such as GPS, compass and accelerometer, you must have a general idea of where you are looking in the sky as far as cardinal directions go.

Then you can manually move the Stellarium view to the area of the sky in which you are looking, guided by the N-S-E-W notations shown around the horizon view on the app. Now the app will display the sky as you see it and you can navigate around the view on the app, zoom in and out, find information about objects in the sky, display constellation shapes, etc. Even with some of its automated capabilities limited by the Kindle Fire HD’s lack of built-in orientation software, it is still an outstanding planetarium program, simple to use and intuitive after a bit of practice.

It would satisfy most needs tor a mobile planetarium app, from someone just wanting to learn about the sky for the first time and up to the needs of amateur astronomers. Other programs might offer more eye candy, such as images, tours and video, but for basic orientation and information about the night sky as you see it, this app works well.

Other planetarium software I have tried from Amazon’s app store do not play nice with the limitations of the Kindle Fire HD, as they do not function well in a manual mode, and are frustrating to try to use this way. Stellarium seems quite happy to work well as a manual planetarium program, giving an accurate view of the sky from your location.

Thus, you are able to view only the objects in the sky that are visible at your location at the time you are looking, or you can run the clock forward or backward to see how the view of the sky changes at other times.

I haven’t tried any more expensive apps, so can only offer the assessment that Stellarium is a very good investment for use on the Kindle Fire HD 7 tablet computer.

If you love the night sky or night photography this app is wonderful. I came with my laptop so I bought it for my tablet. Unlike those apps that just wobble around trying to use GPS and don’t seem to know what direction to face I just use a compass or familiar star or landmark for general direction if I am in an unfamiliar place then use the app to compare all the details.

I actually planned a trip and saved the star map to my tablet and was then able to actually compare what I was seeing in the sky to my saved map. Perfect for knowing where the Milky way is going to be. This app will tell you where everything will be at any selected location, date or time, past or future In addition it will give you the constellations.

Its great for planning a night photography trip as you can immediately see for example if the area has a lot of light pollution, or where the moon will be. Its also so much fun just as an educational tool. You can see the constellation names. It fills me with awe to take a night photo and then find that the camera has captured light from a star hundreds or even thousands of light years away. Can’t say enough about this app. Beautiful program for beginners and experienced sky enthusiasts.

It was easy to download and it is a user friendly setup. Now if you live in a location that isn’t on the list you will need to obtain your coordinates unless of course, you have your GPS turned on for government surveillance.

Either way once you’re location is set the skies open up in a big way. This program even has a night time mode so it makes sky viewing much easier for comparing your tablet sky with the real thing.

This is a great little app with zoom in and outs so as to detail the close stuff as well as the far, far away objects of the night. A little complicated to use, but I haven’t really had the time to research how to use all the content, so that may just be my shortcoming, not the app’s. I like the night vision infra-red type screen for use while stargazing in the darkness, so as not to mess with your night vision. I recommend it, especially if you have the time to get to know it.

Great little app for the price. One person found this helpful. I was disappointed, galaxy tap A Can’t get it to do anything but look at a picture of a field, snow, ocean, or a screen with some of Saturn’s gasses.

No good for Kindle HD10 and no real help to make it work. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I bought this app for my kindle as it is easier to take a kindle into the back garden to look at the stars, then keep popping in and out the house to view the program on my desktop computer.

It is a little bit fiddly if trying to work out what exactly you are looking at. But I consider this app to be very informative. Have been using this program on a Mac for a while – great to find I could get it as an app for Kindle : Very useful the other night for deciding if I was looking at Mars or not!

I love this app. Thank you for the work put into it for getting it all together Worth a million star rating. Report abuse. As I don’t have Google Play and its excellent star map, I decided to try this out and whilst it took a while to set up the way I wanted, its a decent app.

It seems decently responsive and uses the hardware well and the features are pretty good and a little better than some of the competition. Well worth it. I have this app on all my devices for years, it is still the best star map app available. Amazon Appstore Return Policy. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Make Money with Us. Amazon Payment Products.
